The three doshas
According to Ayurveda, there are three energy types, or doshas, that can bring us out of balance, turning wonderful qualities into bad characteristics. To understand why, we need to understand the spesific types of the doshas.
Characteristics:
Vata consists of the elements air and space and is responsible for movement in the body and mind. People with a dominant Vata dosha are often energetic, creative, and lively. They tend to be slim, with dry skin and cold hands and feet. Vata types are known for their quick thinking and ability to multitask. They are highly creative, often full of ideas, and make friends easily. However, they can be forgetful, unpredictable, and their emotions can change rapidly.
Pros and Cons:
- Pros: Rational thinking, goal-oriented, proud, and determined. They classify things as right or wrong and have high morals.
Lifestyle Recommendations:
- Routine: Establish a regular daily routine with set times for eating, sleeping, and working to provide stability.
- Exercise: Engage in calming activities like yoga, Tai Chi, or gentle walks. Avoid overstimulation.
- Rest: Ensure adequate rest and relaxation to counterbalance natural restlessness.
- Diet: Favor warm, cooked foods with moderate amounts of oil. Avoid raw foods and cold beverages. Include sweet, sour, and salty tastes in your meals.
Characteristics:
Kapha is composed of earth and water elements and governs structure and stability in the body. People with a dominant Kapha dosha are often calm, humble, and non-judgmental. They have a loving personality and are typically larger build with smooth, oily skin. Kapha types are known for their steady, consistent beliefs and their desire to not hurt others. They prefer deep, meaningful relationships over a large social circle.
Pros and Cons:
- Pros: Humble, non-judgmental, calm, and loving. They have a strong and consistent belief system and seek deep conversations.
- Cons: Can be passive, isolated, and have fewer ideas. They may struggle with lethargy and weight gain.
Lifestyle Recommendations:
- Routine: Stay active and avoid oversleeping or excessive relaxation.
- Exercise: Engage in vigorous activities like running, aerobics, or competitive sports.
- Diet: Favor light, dry, and warm foods. Avoid heavy, oily, and sweet foods. Include pungent, bitter, and astringent tastes in your meals.
Characteristics:
Pitta is made of fire and water elements and governs digestion and metabolism. People with a dominant Pitta dosha are often rational, goal-oriented, and proud. They usually have normal body types and can have a sharp intellect. Pitta types are known for their determination and decisiveness. However, they can be demanding, easily irritated, and less tolerant of others' mistakes.
